This little pattern has a big story! At rug camps, teachers are often asked to present "mini classes" of something for anyone at the camp to take. A few years ago, I decided this pattern would be a good option. As I don't like kits, I decided to present 4 different colourways; but I didn't have the time to hook all 4. So I decided to "halve" them. The gold kit is shown at the top left; a student made it into a pillow.

Off to the right is the mat of the 4 colourways that I did. This is typical of how I like to hook what might otherwise be a big, blobby fried egg flower. To my surprise. . the kits were an instant hit at every mini class I took them to!

Nancy Thompson was one of the many hookers who enjoyed the kit. In fact, she told me, she enjoyed it so much that she wanted to make a whole rug of 9 blocks of the Rose of Sharon. And, again to my surprise, she wanted it just like my sample piece, with all 4 colour plans. So, i created it for her and she worked on it at Caraway camp in my class, 2006. Nancy did it on a 6 cut, just as mine is, so you can get extra "detail" in. She finished it in no time, and here it is (the bottom piece) at Caraway 07, where it was a huge smash! It's a wonderful rug!

Others have asked me for this design in rug form, so if you are one who would like it that way, contact me and let me know how many blocks you'd like!

The Rose of Sharon by Linda Gustafson, who very creatively used a "log cabin" behind the flowers. We had fun watching this develop in my class at Cedar Lakes!
